    PLTW Robot Evaluation

    Students designed an experiment to test the effects of force on an object.  The force was provided by the robot and the objects were simulated radioactive materials that they needed to move to a collection zone.  They created a testing site and a data table to evaluate their model.  After the data was collected they created a presentation to share information on the success or failure of their design, as well as, the evidence to prove the success claims.

    PLTW Modify Robot Chassis

    Students modify the robot chassis to better interact with the simulated radioactive materials.  They added parts that could better contain the materials while the robot was moving.  This was the model part of their design process.  Prior to this they "explored" by generating ideas that they thought would move the materials and then narrowed that to one model that they would build and test.

    Sensor Test

    Students built a testing platform to explore the function of robot sensors.  Data was collected about the effect that the sensors had on motor behaviors. The data would be used when modifying a robot later in the module to interact with simulated radioactive materials.

  • Daylight 24/7

    students show prototype for reflected light from satellite

    5th grade students used what they learned about light properties and Earth's day and night cycle to design and build a prototype.  The prototype's purpose was to create daylight conditions for 24 hours over extended periods.  This group used the design process to construct a satellite that reflected light back onto the side of the Earth that was in shadow.  As Earth rotated, the people on the shadowed side experience partial daylight even when it was supposed to be nighttime.

  • Potential and Kinetic Energy

    5th Grade Energy Pict

    5th grade students working on assembling a pendulum to test the relationship between potential and kinetic energy. This activity is part of the district's Project Lead the Way (PLTW) initiative to provide our students with the understanding and skills to be successful in school and life.
