Rio Hondo Elementary
Welcome to Rio Hondo Elementary, where we work everyday to achieve “Academic Excellence and Success” for ALL!
Rio Hondo Elementary was dedicated in _____ to serve PK – 2nd grade students. It is a warm, friendly and welcoming school. Rio Hondo Elementary prides itself in student success. We have high expectations and work as a team alongside the parents to help students achieve required learning goals. Rio Hondo Elementary staff believes that students should be at the center of the educational experience and that parents are partners in achieving academic success. We are committed to doing whatever it takes to help every child succeed.
Rio Hondo Elementary is a GREAT place to be. We are excited to be embedding STEMS, music, and art into our curriculum. We use the Texas Performance Standards Project curriculum to serve our Gifted and Talented students. Our students visit the computer lab daily to work on their reading and math skills though technology. We have a Choir Club and are beginning our Chess Club soon! We have Family Literacy and Homework Help every Monday evening to help support and developing literacy. Our school also has an after school care Latchkey program to serve children until 5:30 p.m. daily for a minimal fee.
We look forward to working with our students, parents, and community and extend a warm welcome to all of those who have recently joined our school family. We thank you for trusting us with the education of your children. It is a job we do not take lightly. We encourage parents and community members to contact us with any questions, compliments, or concerns. We are here to help and want to support you and your children in your quest for success.
Thank you in advance for your support! We look forward to a successful school year as we work toward “Academic Excellence and Success” for ALL students.
What are some simple ways parents can support their child’s academic, social, and emotional growth? Read below to find out.
1. Make sure your children get enough sleep every night.
The National Sleep Foundation recommends that 3 -5 year olds get 10-13 hours of sleep and 6-13 year olds get 9-11 hours of sleep. (sleepfoundation.org)
2. Bring your children to school everyday unless they have a fever or are vomiting.
Early elementary grades are critical for building a strong foundation for reading and math. Students who master basic skills like letter knowledge, letter sounds, identifying numbers and their value, etc., will perform much more successfully as they move from grade to grade.
3. Arrive to school on time and leave your child at school for the entire school day.
Every educational minute is critical to student success. Coming to school late and leaving early can create learning gaps. Give your child the best chance to learn by getting them to school on time and leaving them at school all day. School hours are from 7:45 – 3:15p.m.
4. Check your child’s homework folder daily.
By doing this you are sending the message that school is important. If you cannot help your child with some of their homework, please circle what you do not understand and we will help your child at school.
5. Read to your child or with your child 20 minutes everyday.
Students who read at least 20 minutes outside of the school day increase their reading fluency and comprehension in a very BIG way. Wide reading also increases a child’s vocabulary which in turn, increases their speaking and comprehension abilities.
6. Volunteer to read or tutor students in the classroom.
Every teacher loves to have parents help in the classroom. We need parents to listen to and help children read. We need parents to help us tutor during the school day. Contribute to the academic success of the children of our school community by volunteering your time.
